Spanish Foreign Minister Albares criticizes PP over 'grandchildren law' dispute

Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has accused the People's Party (PP) of attempting to “harass” and “intimidate” consular staff and the Foreign Service. The dispute stems from the PP's threat to take legal action against consulates for allegedly failing to comply with a Supreme Court order regarding the Democratic Memory Law, specifically concerning the verification of nationality for descendants of exiles ahead of the November 29 elections.

Albares stated that the PP leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has lied about the actions of civil servants, asserting that the entire Foreign Service is “scrupulously” complying with the court's mandate. The Minister characterized the opposition's actions as a distraction from their own electoral proposals regarding cuts to pensions, public education, and healthcare. While Albares noted that consular offices are working “against the clock” to meet the requirements, he admitted that “time is short” regarding the completion of these processes.
