Spanish government completes appointments to key economic regulators
The Spanish government has completed the appointment of key personnel to the nation's economic regulatory bodies. Through a ministerial order issued by First Vice President Carlos Cuerpo, the government has renewed Mariano Bacigalupo as a commissioner for the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) for an additional two years, extending his term until the end of 2028. Additionally, Ángel Estrada has been appointed to the CNMV with a mandate lasting until 2032.
This series of appointments brings the total number of government-aligned members across major regulatory institutions—including the Bank of Spain, the CNMV, the National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), and the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN)—to approximately 25. These individuals will hold majorities in these institutions throughout the next legislative period.
While the appointees possess technical expertise, the renewals have been conducted without seeking consensus from political opposition parties, departing from previous traditions regarding the independence of these institutions. The appointment of Bacigalupo had previously faced legal challenges regarding his professional profile, though the National Court dismissed such appeals, ruling that the appointment complied with legal requirements.
