Spanish Government demands return of 1.4 million euros in cinema subsidies
The Spanish Institute of Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts (ICAA), under the Ministry of Culture, is demanding the full return of 1,416,666 euros from six autonomous communities. These funds were originally distributed to 112 movie theaters to support audience creation.
Andalusia faces the highest volume of requested returns, followed by the Valencian Community, Castilla La Mancha, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, and Navarra. The total amount of grants originally issued was 8.5 million euros.
The Ministry of Culture stated that the reclamation follows observations from the Delegated Intervention and the General Intervention of the Ministry of Finance. However, the cinema sector and regional governments have expressed dissatisfaction, citing the 'supervening application' of requirements that were not part of the original transfer conditions. The Junta de Andalucía maintains it fulfilled all requirements 'in time and form' by approving regulatory bases and issuing calls within the established deadlines.
