Spanish Government vetoes Balearic airport co-management law

The Spanish Government, led by the PSOE-Sumar coalition, has vetoed the processing of the Airport Co-management Law in the Balearic Islands. This law, approved by the Balearic Parliament, would have allowed the islands to decide on the number of flights at their airports and set airport fees.

The central government justifies the veto by stating the proposal lacks conformity due to its potential negative impact on the revenues of the airport operator Aena and, consequently, on state income. Marga Prohens, President of the Balearic Government, has criticized the move, arguing it prevents the region from having a voice in limiting flights and managing tourism containment.

The fate of the law now rests with the Congress of Deputies. The parliamentary board is expected to vote on whether to lift the government's veto. While the PSOE and PSIB align with the central government's position, the PP and Sumar parliamentary groups hold enough votes to potentially bypass the veto and allow the law to proceed with its parliamentary processing.
