Spain supermarket prices: Families can save 1,310 euros annually

A 2026 study by the OCU reveals significant disparities in supermarket pricing across Spain, noting that families can save an average of 1,310 euros annually by choosing the cheapest available retailers. The study, which analyzed a basket of 244 products across 690 establishments, found that the annual cost for this basket averages 6,602 euros.

Geographic location heavily influences potential savings. In Madrid, the price gap between the most and least expensive supermarkets can exceed 4,381 euros per year. Conversely, in Mieres, the difference is only 381 euros. Torrent in Valencia was identified as the cheapest locality, while Getxo, Pozuelo de Alarcón, and Majadahonda were among the most expensive.

In the Extremadura region, the Unión de Consumidores de Extremadura (UCE) reported that families are spending an average of 6,500 euros annually on groceries, an increase of 373 euros from the previous year. UCE representative Lali Bermejo noted that essential items like coffee and eggs have seen dramatic price hikes, leading some consumers to shift toward processed foods, which may impact public health.
