Spanish health groups propose national strategy for childhood myopia

Fourteen scientific societies, professional organizations, and patient associations, united under the 'Mirando al Futuro' initiative, have presented the 'Decálogo para la Salud Visual Infantil en España' at the Congress of Deputies. The proposal seeks to establish a National Strategy for Childhood Visual Health focused on the prevention, early detection, and control of myopia progression.

Experts highlighted that myopia is an irreversible condition and warned of a potential 'epidemic of visual disability.' Current data indicates that one in five children is myopic, with projections suggesting this figure could rise to 30% by 2030. The proposed roadmap advocates for a shift from a purely corrective model to a continuous approach that integrates prevention, monitoring, and equitable care by connecting schools, primary care, and specialized medical services.
