Spanish regional health authorities expand biomedical research initiatives
In Spain, regional health authorities are advancing biomedical research through specialized networks and new funding initiatives. In the Valencian Community, a health research network composed of seven foundations is managing over 1,000 projects and clinical studies focused on combating and preventing cancer. Key institutions include Fisabio, INCLIVA, IIS La Fe, ISABIAL, FHPC, and the Príncipe Felipe Research Center. Notably, INCLIVA is currently managing 54 cancer-related projects with funding exceeding 10.5 million euros, while the Príncipe Felipe Research Center oversees 51 competitive projects totaling more than 14.8 million euros.
In the Balearic Islands, the Balearic Health Research Institute (IdISBa) has launched a donation platform designed to connect citizens, companies, and entities with biomedical research projects. The platform allows for contributions starting from one euro to support various areas, including oncology, pediatric stroke studies, regenerative medicine for vision recovery, and 3D printing simulation units. The initiative also enables community events, such as weddings or sporting races, to be used as fundraising opportunities for scientific advancement.
