Spanish historical memory groups conduct Civil War exhumations
Efforts to recover victims of the Spanish Civil War continue in different regions of Spain. In Salamanca, the Association Salamanca for Memory and Justice is seeking the families of 17 individuals repressed during the conflict. The group is preparing to exhume remains from a mass grave in the Puente del Congosto cemetery, where victims were killed in August and September 1936. The association is calling for citizen cooperation to locate relatives for DNA testing to achieve conclusive identification, specifically seeking descendants of Miguel and Emilio Escobar Moreno.
In the Urkiola Natural Park, the Association for the Historical Memory Saibigain 1937 has recovered four new bodies from the Saibigain mountain area, bringing the total number of exhumed combatants to nine. These remains, likely belonging to Republican forces based on recovered items such as French Lebel ammunition and Euzkadi coins, date back to the battles of April 1937. The association aims to provide closure to families of over one hundred people who disappeared in the area during the offensive against Bizkaia.
