Spanish hospitality sector faces debate over pricing and service charges

A debate regarding pricing practices in the Spanish hospitality sector has resurfaced following viral social media posts. Vicente Nicolau, owner of Las Brasas Steakhouse in Mallorca, shared a receipt showing a total of 11.80 euros for four people, which included only water, bread, and aioli. Nicolau used the example to highlight the low spending per customer among certain tourist groups, noting that such low-revenue tables can be unprofitable when accounting for overhead.

Parallel to this, controversy has arisen over the practice of charging surcharges for ice in coffee. While ice is typically included in the price of soft drinks, some establishments charge between 0.10 and 0.40 euros for ice requested with hot coffee. Business owners defend these charges by citing the costs of electricity, industrial ice production, and the additional glassware and labor required to serve ice as a separate component. Consumer associations are monitoring these practices to ensure they remain within legal limits.
