Spanish hospitals host events for World Ostomy Day
Healthcare institutions and patient associations in Spain are organizing events to mark World Ostomy Day, aiming to normalize life with an ostomy and reduce social taboos.
In Elche, the Hospital Universitario del Vinalopó held a sensitization day featuring the slogan ‘I am ostomized and...’ to showcase that an ostomy does not define a person's identity or future. The initiative included photographic exhibitions and participation from Patricia Veiga, a nurse and advocate known as @ostobag, who uses her personal experience to promote the idea that an active life is possible with a stoma.
In Cádiz, the association Ostogades and the Hospital Puerta del Mar are coordinating activities, including the IV Conference on Ostomy under the theme ‘Beyond the skin: linked stories, lives in connection.’ These sessions will feature medical professionals and patients discussing daily needs and challenges. Additionally, a public route organized by Ostogades will take place on October 3 to increase visibility and support for affected patients.
