Spanish hospitals launch advanced genomic and digital twin medical projects
Healthcare institutions in Spain are implementing cutting-edge technologies to advance personalized medicine. In L’Hospitalet, the CuidaL’HFutur project, led by the Bioclúster d’innovació i salut, aims to analyze 7,000 individuals to improve the diagnosis and prevention of cancer and rare diseases. The study involves 2,000 patients with cancer or minority diseases and 5,000 healthy participants, utilizing advanced genomic technology to facilitate preventive medicine.
Separately, the Hospital Universitario Vall d’Hebron is leading a European initiative to co-develop human digital twins. Supported by 11.7 million euros from European Regional Development Funds (FEDER) via the Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP), the project creates personalized virtual representations of organs and physiological systems. These computational models allow clinicians to anticipate pathological evolution and test therapeutic procedures before applying them to patients. This initiative uses an innovative public procurement model to establish direct co-development partnerships with technology firms.
