Spanish Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez defends private investment
Spanish Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez has addressed the distinction between sustainable housing investment and speculation. In a recent interview, she stated that investing in housing does not make one a ‘vulture fund’ provided the investor is willing to accept limited profits or operate on a non-profit basis.
Rodríguez emphasized that speculation occurs when investors exploit tenant income to maximize returns, which she argues violates the social function of housing. She noted that the government is supporting private investments that are socially sustainable through the use of public and European funds.
Regarding housing production, the Minister defended the current administration's efforts, noting that protected housing production has increased significantly since 2018. She attributed current construction limits to external factors, such as labor shortages.
