Spanish immigration exhibition opens in Dominican Republic
The Spanish Embassy and the Foundation for Spanish Immigration in the Dominican Republic (FINMIESP) have inaugurated an itinerant exhibition titled ‘La inmigración española en la República Dominicana: una historia que contar’. The exhibition, which recently opened at the Centro Español in Santiago de los Caballeros, uses 24 panels to document the socioeconomic and cultural impact of Spanish migrants over the last 150 years.
The display highlights key historical periods, including the arrival of Spanish Republican refugees following the Spanish Civil War in 1939. These individuals, including intellectuals, scientists, and artists, significantly influenced Dominican academia, arts, and literature. The exhibition also covers agricultural settlements established through interstate agreements in the mid-20th century and the role of Spanish immigrants in commerce, education, and architecture.
Featuring research from Manuel García Arévalo and Francis Pou León, the collection includes photographs and documents from the General Archive of the Nation and private collections. Following its debut in Santiago, the exhibition is scheduled to move to the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National Library in Santo Domingo on November 25, and to the Club 2 de Julio in San Pedro de Macorís on December 4.
