Spanish judicial authorities demand more resources amid rising litigation
Judicial authorities in Huesca and the Canary Islands have called for increased resources and personnel during their respective openings of the 2025-2026 judicial year.
In Huesca, President Marina Rodríguez and Chief Prosecutor Juan Andrés Baratech highlighted a rise in juvenile justice cases and the need for more staff to address gender violence and maintain judicial independence. They specifically requested three new positions to manage the growing workload in the province.
In the Canary Islands, President of the High Court of Justice, Juan Avello, demanded more judges to combat an exponential increase in litigation. Avello noted that Canary Island judges issue more sentences and handle a higher volume of lawsuits than any other region in Spain. He emphasized that manageable workloads are essential for judicial quality and the mental health of legal professionals.
