King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia had scheduled a state visit to Qatar in April, invited by Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. The trip would have marked the first Spanish monarchs' state visit to the Gulf region. A separate visit to Bolivia at the end of June was planned to review Spanish cooperation projects. Former King Juan Carlos I also cancelled a private trip from Abu Dhabi to Spain and a sailing event in Sanxenxo because of the same instability.
