Spanish language's global rise underscored by tourism summit in Seville and new geopolitical study
A recent analysis by the Real Academia Española and the Centro Superior de Estudios de la Defensa Nacional highlights Spanish as a strategic cultural, economic and political asset, noting roughly 520 million native speakers and an additional 60‑80 million learners worldwide. The study cites the sport‑driven global spotlight on the language after Ferran Torres' 106th‑minute goal for Spain against Argentina on 19 July, and the prominence of Spanish‑language artists such as Bad Bunny and Rosalía.
In parallel, the southern region of Spain is cementing its role in Spanish‑language tourism. The MEET Andalucía 2026 conference, held in Seville in April, gathered more than 30 specialised agencies and about 100 international professionals. Organized by the Asociación Escuelas de Español de Andalucía, the event showcases a network of 40 centres across Cádiz, Granada, Málaga, Córdoba, Huelva and Sevilla, which together host 37.43 % of Spain’s Spanish‑language students. While enrolments fell to 60,211 in 2025 from 63,504 the year before, total weeks of stay rose 23.4 % to 365,655, driven by longer average stays of 8.30 weeks per individual student, signalling a shift toward higher‑value, immersive programmes.
