Spanish left-wing parties fail to reach unified electoral coalition
Spanish left-wing factions have failed to form a single unified candidacy for the upcoming general elections on November 29. Instead, the political landscape will see a split between the 'Front Ampli'—comprising Izquierda Unida, Sumar, Comuns, Más Madrid, Chunta Aragonesista, and Compromís—and Podemos.
Internal tensions have surfaced regarding candidate placement and party visibility. In Alicante, Esquerra Unida del País Valencià (EUPV) expressed dissatisfaction with the 'Compromís – Front Valencià' electoral brand, calling the agreement 'unjust' because it places Podemos's María Teresa Pérez at the head of the list. EUPV argued that their territorial presence and political background deserved greater recognition.
Further friction exists between ERC and other left-wing groups. Jaume Asens of Catalunya en Comú accused ERC's Gabriel Rufián of attempting to 'fragment' the left by negotiating directly with Podemos in Catalonia, rather than joining the broader Front Ampli. Asens described the move as a 'hostile takeover' against Comuns, noting that ERC's decision to lead its own lists prevents a consolidated left-wing vote.
