Spanish legal bodies address law reforms and lawyer dismissals

The General Council of Spanish Lawyers (CGAE) has called for a “scrupulous” and legal approach regarding a potential reform of the ‘Grandchildren’s Law.’ This follows a proposal by the Sumar party to amend the law via an amendment to the Education Law, aiming to address the core issues currently being reviewed by the Supreme Court. The legal dispute concerns the scope of the original law, which allowed descendants of those who fled Spain due to political persecution during the Civil War to claim nationality, and a subsequent Ministry of Justice instruction that expanded these possibilities.

Separately, the New Association of State Lawyers for the Rule of Law has expressed concern over the dismissal of the state lawyer representing the Ceuta Port Authority. The association suggests the dismissal may have occurred after the lawyer raised legal objections regarding the use of port land, classified as “critical infrastructure,” for migrant settlements following mass arrivals in Ceuta in late July. While the lawyer ultimately followed instructions and supported the decision, the association argues that removing a professional for providing legal counsel could compromise the independence necessary for public institutions.
