Spanish livestock sector reduces ammonia emissions by 17.6% since 2005
The Spanish livestock sector has achieved a 17.6% reduction in ammonia emissions since 2005, according to data from the Spanish Emissions Inventory System (SEI). In 2024, emissions decreased by 2.3% compared to the previous year, driven largely by a 14.9% reduction in manure management and a 2.1% decrease in organic fertilizer application.
This progress allows Spain to meet its National Emission Ceilings directive commitments for the fourth consecutive year. While emissions from nitrogen-based fertilizers saw a slight increase in 2024 due to higher urea consumption, the overall reduction remains within the required targets.
Beyond regulatory compliance, the industry is increasingly turning to precision nutrition and digital solutions to enhance sustainability. As livestock accounts for 14% to 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions, companies like Trouw Nutrition are developing digital tools to optimize feed formulation, aiming to reduce environmental footprints through technical data and improved efficiency.
