Spanish meat industry warns of rising energy and transport costs
Spanish meat industry associations Anice and Fecic have issued an alert regarding the sharp rise in energy and transport costs. They are calling on the Spanish government to include the food industry in upcoming measures designed to mitigate rising energy expenses.
Data indicates a significant surge in costs: wholesale electricity prices rose by over 136% in the first twenty days of September compared to the same period in 2025. Natural gas prices have also increased by approximately 68% since June. Additionally, diesel prices have risen nearly 68% since the start of the current geopolitical crisis, impacting logistics and the cold chain.
The industry is particularly vulnerable due to the continuous need for electricity in slaughterhouses, cutting rooms, and cold storage facilities, as well as gas for thermal processes and cleaning.
In a separate development aimed at long-term competitiveness, Fecic has signed a collaboration agreement with Alimentaria FoodTech. This partnership seeks to promote innovation, digitalization, and sustainability within the meat sector, highlighting new technological solutions at the upcoming trade fair in Barcelona.
