Spanish medical associations raise concerns over resident training and staffing

The MIR Association in Spain has alerted teaching units regarding the potential misuse of medical residents. The association expressed concern that some residents are being assigned to roles different from their original designations or are being used to cover for specialists during strikes. This practice, specifically noted in Ceuta and the Canary Islands, may compromise specialized training and patient safety.

The association emphasized that while clinical activity is a core part of training, it must occur within the established educational framework with progressive responsibility and adequate supervision. They argued that residents should not be used as a routine resource to resolve structural organizational deficiencies or coverage gaps.

In a separate regional report, data from the Medical Union indicates challenges in retaining new specialists in Navarra. Only 31% of the 115 new specialists who completed their MIR training this year accepted positions with the Navarra Health Service. The retention rate was notably lower in Family Medicine, where only 25% of interested candidates accepted contracts.
