Spanish medical society warns of rising professional intrusion in aesthetic medicine

The Spanish Society of Aesthetic Medicine (SEME) has issued an urgent warning regarding the rising incidence of professional intrusion within the aesthetic medicine sector. According to SEME’s latest Perception Report on Aesthetic Medicine in Spain, conducted in collaboration with Sigma Dos, 46% of the Spanish population has undergone an aesthetic treatment, and 30% intend to do so in the future.

Despite the high prevalence of these procedures, the report highlights a significant lack of awareness among patients. Approximately 44% of users are unaware that aesthetic treatments must be performed exclusively by registered medical doctors in clinics holding specific U. 48 sanitary licenses. This lack of knowledge has led many to seek services in unauthorized locations such as hair salons, beauty centers, or even gyms.

SEME president Juan Antonio López-Pitalúa emphasized that aesthetic medicine should not be trivialized, noting that any medical infiltration or technology is a medical act. The society expressed particular concern for young adults aged 25 to 30, who may be driven by digital trends and lower incomes to prioritize price over safety, potentially leading to irreparable physical and psychological consequences.
