Spanish medieval castles in Guadalajara and Cádiz reopen to visitors

The 14th‑century Castle of Cifuentes in the province of Guadalajara, built in 1324 by Juan Manuel, has been restored with a €700,000 investment and will open to the public in August. The fortress features a square plan, a pentagonal keep, and towers that survived the War of Independence and the Carlist wars.

In the province of Cádiz, the Castillo del Altozano—also known as the Castle of the Guzmanes—in Trebujena has been renovated and now houses a Centre for Historical Interpretation. Constructed between the 13th and 14th centuries under Alonso Pérez de Guzmán, the castle once guarded the Guadalquivir mouth and the surrounding marshes. Both sites highlight Spain’s medieval heritage and are being promoted as cultural attractions after extensive conservation work.
