Spanish metropolitan areas seek alliance to address urban challenges
Political and technical representatives from several major Spanish metropolitan areas, including Barcelona, Bilbao, A Coruña, Zaragoza, Málaga, Valencia, and Tarragona, have agreed to work toward a stable alliance. The goal is to jointly address urban challenges and strengthen metropolitan public policies.
The commitment was made during the “Una agenda metropolitana para las ciudades españolas” event in Cornellà de Llobregat, led by the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) to mark its 15th anniversary. While many of these cities already collaborate on mobility, waste management, and water, they currently lack their own metropolitan governing bodies. The alliance aims to foster cooperation to better respond to economic, social, environmental, and technological urban pressures.
In a separate development regarding urban technology, the 15th edition of the Smart City Expo World Congress (SCEWC) is scheduled to take place in Barcelona from November 3 to 5. Under the theme “Urban Solutions, Real Impact,” the event will focus on technologies and policies that have already demonstrated measurable results in solving urban issues such as extreme heat, congestion, and housing affordability.
