Nico Williams gives medal to mother, highlighting migrant family journey after Spain's World Cup triumph

Spain defeated Argentina 1‑0 to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nico Williams, the 24‑year‑old winger, provided the decisive assist to Ferran Torres and played key minutes despite a season‑long injury struggle.

After the final whistle, Williams ran to the stands, removed his champion medal and placed it around his mother María Comfort Arthuer’s neck. The emotional gesture was captured on video and quickly went viral across social media.

Williams’ older brother, Iñaki – who represents Ghana internationally – posted a heartfelt message praising Nico’s achievement and noting that the story resonates with millions of migrant families. Iñaki wrote that the victory “makes proud millions of immigrants like our parents and many Spaniards”.

Spanish minister Félix Bolaños shared the clip on X, using it to underline immigration and diversity, which sparked debate over politicising a sporting celebration.

The brothers’ background traces back to their parents, Félix and María, who fled Ghana in the early 1990s, walked across the Sahara and eventually settled in Bilbao. Their arduous journey and years of hardship underpin the narrative celebrated during the World Cup win.
