Spanish Royal Family to visit Ceuta and Melilla in historic official trip

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are scheduled to conduct an official visit to the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla on October 13 and 14. In a historic move, the monarchs will spend the night in Ceuta on October 13, marking the first time a Spanish Head of State has stayed overnight in the city during the democratic era. The visit, which has been coordinated with the Spanish government, aims to project institutional stability following recent migration crises at the borders with Morocco.

In preparation for the visit, Melilla has launched an outdoor exhibition titled ‘Casa Real: Siempre con nosotros, siempre con España’ to highlight the historical ties between the monarchy and the city. Additionally, representatives from both Ceuta and Melilla have been invited to the National Day reception at the Royal Palace on October 12.

The royal visit coincides with political tension. Vox leader Santiago Abascal has announced he will skip the official October 12 military parade in Madrid to visit Ceuta instead. He will be accompanied by Jordan Bardella, leader of the French National Rally. Meanwhile, the Association of Troop and Seamen (ATME) has sent a letter to President Pedro Sánchez, expressing that military personnel in Ceuta feel unsupported and abandoned by the government during their missions.
