Spanish municipalities expand cemetery capacities

Several municipalities in Spain are undertaking projects to expand cemetery capacities due to a lack of burial space.

In Albacete, the City Council has approved a project for the Virgen de los Llanos Cemetery with a tender budget of 1,374,983 euros. The expansion includes two new burial pavilions featuring 912 niches and 128 columbariums, as well as a new 58-square-meter restroom block. The construction is expected to take six months and will include improved accessibility, landscaping, and new roadways.

In the regions of Montesa and Guadasséquies, local authorities are also addressing space shortages. Montesa plans to invest approximately 82,569 euros to construct 72 prefabricated niches, a method chosen for its speed, cost-effectiveness, and hygiene. Meanwhile, Guadasséquies intends to execute a project costing nearly 60,000 euros to provide 16 niches and 50 columbarium modules.
