Spanish municipalities face issues with playground safety and vandalism
In Cádiz, the political group Sumar has called on the City Council to remove rubber flooring from playgrounds due to potential health risks. Citing warnings from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and environmental groups, the party argues that these surfaces can release endocrine disruptors, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals through wear and high temperatures. Sumar criticized the municipal government for allocating 500,000 euros to install new rubber surfaces despite European regulations regarding toxic substances.
Meanwhile, in Plasencia, newly renovated playgrounds have fallen victim to vandalism. Local official Mayte Díaz confirmed that several of the 18 recently updated spaces, including a park near Miralvalle school, have been damaged. Because vandalism is not covered by manufacturer warranties, the costs for repairs must be met by municipal funds.
