Spanish municipalities implement new urban accessibility initiatives
Municipalities in Spain are advancing initiatives to improve urban accessibility and inclusion. In Purísima del Rincón, councilman Salvador Cruz Villegas has proposed the creation of a municipal manual for inclusive service and facilities. The goal is to provide technical guidance to business owners so that accessibility features, such as ramps and adapted restrooms, are integrated into the initial design and construction phases rather than added as costly retrofits.
In Montilla, the local government is developing a Municipal Accessibility Plan. Following a technical diagnosis, the process has moved into a citizen participation phase to gather feedback on physical, sensory, and cognitive barriers. Mayor Rafael Llamas and Urbanism Councilor Lidia Bujalance emphasized that the plan aims to balance pedestrian and vehicle spaces to improve quality of life and social coexistence, ensuring the city adapts to diverse physical and sensory needs.
