Spanish municipalities install new speed cameras and traffic lights to boost road safety

The Fuengirola town council has installed three permanent speed‑control radars and eight mobile “pedagogic” radars at strategic points on avenues such as Ramón y Cajal, Las Gaviotas and the Paseo Marítimo. The devices, which inform drivers of their speed without issuing fines, complement an existing network of more than 200 police‑operated cameras. Councilor Isabel González said, “We continue to implement traffic‑calming measures to make Fuengirola safer, more sustainable and smarter,” noting that the project is funded through EU Next Generation EU recovery funds.

In the city of Elche, new traffic lights have been activated at several intersections on Avenida de Novelda and at the junction with Avenida de la Universidad. The upgrade also includes widened sidewalks, additional pedestrian crossings, accessible vado crossings, and refreshed vertical and horizontal signage. The work, costing €210,000, is part of the municipality’s broader strategy to improve road safety and traffic flow.
