Spanish municipalities restore historical walls to boost tourism
Several Spanish municipalities are investing in the restoration of historical fortifications to boost local tourism and preserve cultural heritage.
In Morella, the City Council is rehabilitating the Paseo de Ronda between the Sant Miquel and Torre Redona towers. This 50,000-euro project, funded by Wind Compensation Funds, aims to improve safety, accessibility, and conservation of the deteriorated wall section. By 2026, the city expects to expand its visitable heritage sites from two towers to six.
In Burguete, the local government is reconstructing parts of a 17th-century wall that once surrounded the urban center. The project, valued at 1.12 million euros, is 80% complete and is being fully funded by the Ministry of Industry and Tourism. The initiative is intended to recover local memory and promote tourism rather than for defensive purposes.
