Spanish municipalities start construction of large covered pools

The town of Candelaria on Tenerife has begun work on a new covered swimming pool after years of planning and a budget of more than €8.5 million. The two‑year project will create a 3,210 m² facility with two pools (25 × 12.5 m and 10.25 × 12.5 m), a gym, changing rooms, and parking for 63 cars. Mayor Mari Brito said the start marks a decisive step for local sport infrastructure and noted measures to mitigate parking disruptions.

In nearby San Fernando, the municipal council awarded Pujol y Cruz Arquitectos a €210,294 contract to design a covered pool slated to cost up to €5.5 million. The contract includes a seven‑month design phase, after which construction could begin in 2027, coinciding with municipal elections. The pool will feature a 25 × 25 m main basin with ten lanes, an additional 25 × 8 m area, extensive changing facilities, and seating for 200‑300 spectators, aiming to alleviate demand on the town’s existing 1990s pools.
