Audiencia Nacional archives terrorism case against 12 CDR members

The Audiencia Nacional has ordered the dismissal and closure of the criminal case against twelve members of the Committees for the Defense of the Republic (CDR) who were being prosecuted for terrorism. The court ruled for the extinction of criminal liability, applying the Amnesty Law following a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).

The investigation, known as Operation Judas, targeted individuals accused of belonging to a radicalized faction called the Tactical Response Team (ERT). The prosecution had initially sought prison sentences ranging from eight to 27 years. However, the CJEU determined that the amnesty law does not contravene EU law, noting that the investigated acts, while provisionally classified as terrorism, did not constitute serious intentional violations of human rights.

The decision follows a request from the Public Prosecutor's Office to close the proceedings. Political leaders, including Carles Puigdemont and Oriol Junqueras, described the ruling as a significant development, while activists involved expressed mixed emotions regarding the long duration of the legal process.
