Spanish Navy to acquire MBDA SIMBAD RC missile defense systems

MBDA and the Spanish Navy have signed a framework agreement to procure three SIMBAD RC short-range air defense systems. This procurement aims to provide the fleet with a dedicated close-in missile capability, specifically addressing gaps in point defense against anti-ship missiles, sea-skimming missiles, aircraft, and drones.

The SIMBAD RC system is based on the Mistral missile family and is designed to be operated by a single crew member, allowing for 24-hour operation in various weather conditions. It can serve as a primary self-defense solution or an additional protection layer for vessels with longer-range air defense systems.

Initial deployment plans include equipping two Santa María-class (F80) frigates with single launcher configurations and the flagship amphibious assault ship, Juan Carlos I, with a twin launcher configuration. MBDA is reportedly in negotiations with shipbuilder Navantia to integrate the system across the rest of the Spanish Navy's surface fleet, including future Landing Platform Docks and European Patrol Corvette vessels.
