Spain develops F110 IAMD frigate for advanced missile defense

The Spanish Navy and Navantia are collaborating on the F110 Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) frigate, an advanced evolution of the Bonifaz-class series. This new variant is designed to enhance the fleet's ability to detect, track, and engage a wide range of threats, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones.

Key upgrades for the F110 IAMD include increased vertical launch system capacity, higher speeds, and improved endurance for extended deployments. The vessel will utilize the SCOMBA New Generation combat management system, which features cloud-based architecture to integrate sensors, weapons, and autonomous systems into a shared tactical picture. This development aligns with the Armada 2050 strategy to strengthen maritime sovereignty and protect strategic interests in regions such as Ceuta, Melilla, and the Canary Islands.

Separately, the Spanish Navy is preparing to launch the F-112 Roger de Lauria, the second ship of the F-110 class, in Ferrol. This vessel represents part of a 4.768 billion euro investment and will feature advanced capabilities, including potential directed-energy weapons and the ability to strike land targets with cruise missiles.
