Spanish novelist Luis Goytisolo, RAE member, dies at 91

Luis Goytisolo, a key figure of Spain’s post‑war literature, died on 12 July 2026 at the age of 91 in Vimbodí, Tarragona. The Real Academia Española confirmed his death; he had occupied the C seat of the academy since 1994‑1995. Goytisolo was best known for the monumental tetralogy Antagonía (Recuento, Los verdes de mayo hasta el mar, La cólera de Aquiles, Teoría del conocimiento), a work described as a “hito” in modern Spanish narrative. He began his career with the Premio Biblioteca Breve‑winning novel Las afueras (1958) and later won the Premio Nacional de Narrativa (1992), the Premio Nacional de las Letras Españolas (2013) and the International Carlos Fuentes prize (2018), among others. A member of the influential Generation of the 1950s, he was the younger brother of celebrated writers Juan and José Agustín Goytisolo. Over seven decades he also contributed essays, articles, directed the literary magazine Letra Internacional, and worked on TVE documentaries. His death marks the loss of one of the most innovative Spanish novelists of the last century.
