Spanish novelist Luis Goytisolo dies at 91

Luis Goytisolo (1935‑2026), the youngest of the Goytisolo literary brothers, died on Sunday at the age of 91. He was a distinguished novelist and the sole member of his family to be elected to the Royal Spanish Academy, occupying the C‑mayúscula chair formerly held by Luis Rosales.

Goytisolo's work, notably the first volume of the Antagonía tetralogy, *Recuento*, earned critical acclaim but never secured the major Spanish literary prizes. In 2012 he was the runner‑up in the Swedish Academy’s deliberations for the Nobel Prize in Literature, which ultimately went to Mo Yan. He remained a prominent figure in Spanish letters, remembered for his autobiographical style and his experiences in the Carabanchel prison during the 1960s.
