Spain nuclear energy: Almaraz extension sparks debate over Ascó and Vandellòs

The Spanish government's decision to extend the operation of the Almaraz nuclear power plant until 2030 has reignited debates regarding the decommissioning schedules of other plants, specifically in Catalonia and Valencia.

Local leaders in Ascó and Vandellòs have expressed support for similar extensions. They argue that nuclear energy is essential for maintaining industrialization levels, ensuring energy sovereignty, and meeting CO2 reduction targets, noting that renewable energy alone is currently insufficient to meet demand. The mayors emphasize that the decision should be based on technical criteria rather than political ones.

In Cofrentes, the nuclear facility is a vital economic driver, contributing approximately 80% of the municipal budget and supporting significant local employment. However, the Ministry for Ecological Transition has clarified that the Almaraz extension does not constitute an automatic extension for other plants. Companies such as Iberdrola and Endesa must negotiate extensions on a plant-by-plant basis. Current schedules still aim for the closure of Ascó I in 2030, Ascó II in 2032, and Vandellòs II in 2035.
