Spanish olive oil producers demand government intervention to stabilize prices

Olive oil producers in Spain are calling on the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to immediately activate supply withdrawal mechanisms for the 2026-2027 campaign. Agricultural organizations, including ASAJA, COAG, UPA, and Cooperativas Agroalimentarias de España, argue that current market prices have fallen below production costs.

Producers estimate that oil availability for the upcoming campaign will exceed 2,175,000 tons. They claim this surplus justifies regulatory measures to stabilize the market and prevent further price declines. The organizations have criticized the Ministry's delay in implementing these tools, stating that the lack of speed is creating “legal insecurity” as the new campaign begins.

While industrial and export associations have opposed these measures, producers maintain that the supply is guaranteed and that withdrawing stock will not compromise product quality or availability. To activate the regulation, the combination of initial stocks and estimated production must reach at least 120% of the average level from the previous six campaigns.
