Spanish pensioners announce major Madrid protest for October 2026
Pensioner organizations in Spain have announced a major national demonstration scheduled for October 24, 2026, in Madrid. Organized by the state coordinator Coespe, the march will begin at Atocha station and conclude at Puerta del Sol. The movement aims to demand dignified pensions, the equalization of the minimum pension with the minimum wage (SMI), and the defense of public services.
Concerns regarding pension adequacy persist, as some retirees may receive amounts below the legal minimum. While the Social Security system provides a 'complemento a mínimos' (minimum supplement) to ensure certain thresholds are met, this aid is not unconditional. Factors such as additional income, residency abroad, or changes in family status can result in the loss of this supplement, leaving pensioners with only the amount calculated from their actual contributions.
