Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez faces mounting corruption probes
Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is under increasing pressure as multiple corruption investigations target his party, family and close allies. Prosecutors are examining alleged kick‑backs on public works, oil and gas contracts, and the procurement of masks during the pandemic. Sanchez’s brother, David, faces charges of influence‑peddling and abuse of public office, while his wife, Begoña Gómez, is accused of illicit enrichment and misuse of her position to secure a university appointment. Former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is also being investigated for alleged influence over the state rescue of the airline Plus Ultra, which prosecutors say may have been used to launder funds linked to Venezuela.
Sanchez denies any wrongdoing, rejects opposition calls for early elections and maintains that his government needs stability. He has pledged full cooperation with the inquiries, while political opponents warn that the scandals could damage the Socialist party’s standing ahead of next year’s general election.
