Spanish police allegedly chokehold F1 photographer in Madrid

An FIA-accredited photographer was reportedly placed in a chokehold by Spanish National Police during the Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid. The incident occurred as the photographer, who is contracted to Williams and shoots for Getty Images, attempted to reach the podium via an authorized media passageway.

Footage and images shared on social media by journalists show the photographer being restrained on the ground. Witnesses and colleagues described the confrontation as “absolutely surreal,” noting that the individual was wearing official team gear and possessed valid media credentials. One report claimed the photographer was carrying approximately €15,000 worth of equipment during the encounter.

The incident has raised concerns regarding the coordination between local law enforcement and Formula 1’s media accreditation systems at the new Madrid circuit. Despite a heavy security presence involving thousands of national and municipal officers, the confrontation has added to the scrutiny surrounding the venue's debut weekend.
