Spanish police convicted of harassment at Algiers embassy

Two Spanish police officers have been convicted of workplace and sexual harassment against a female colleague at the Spanish Embassy in Algiers. The incidents occurred between 2023 and 2024.

According to court proceedings, the harassment included verbal insults, obscene remarks, and physical intimidation. In one instance, an officer pinned the victim against a wall in a cafe; when she sought help from her superior, he reportedly refused to intervene, stating, “I don’t get involved in cases of abuse.”

To avoid prison sentences, the defendants accepted the charges. While prosecutors initially sought six years of imprisonment, the penalties were reduced to six months for workplace harassment and one and a half years for sexual harassment. The convicted officers are also ordered to pay 40,000 euros to the victim.
