Spanish Police defend officers as judge orders trial for Begoña Gómez

The Directorate General of the Spanish National Police issued a public statement rejecting any insinuation that its officers might have aided Begoña Gómez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, in evading justice. The comment follows a judicial resolution by Judge Juan Carlos Peinado that orders the opening of an oral trial for Gómez and revokes her passport over a flight‑risk concern that could involve her police escorts.

In the statement, the police highlighted their constitutional mandate under article 104.1, emphasizing neutrality, political impartiality and full subordination to the law. They described any suggestion that police agents could cooperate in illegal acts as "unjustified" and reaffirmed their commitment to legal compliance and cooperation with the courts, while defending the long‑standing reputation of the force.
