Spanish police intensify summer traffic and public safety checks

In the Basque Country, the Ertzaintza and local police will step up alcohol and drug traffic controls during the summer, operating in specific weeks in June, July and August. Last year they performed 657 controls, testing 4,873 drivers, with 5 % testing positive. Penalties range from €500 and four licence points for low‑level alcohol offenses to €1,000 and six points for higher levels or drug positives.

In Aranjuez, the municipal police carried out 415 actions between 8 and 14 June, including 323 interventions, 92 preventive patrols and seven arrests for offenses such as assault, robbery, gender‑based violence and illegal street vending. The force also addressed urban discipline, traffic obstacles, public‑space maintenance and provided assistance to vulnerable citizens.
