Spanish police investigate suspicious births in Burgos

Spanish police are investigating a suspicious series of births at the University Hospital of Burgos. Between May and June 2026, approximately thirty Brazilian women arrived in the region, many appearing to be in the late stages of pregnancy or ready to give birth. Authorities noted that most of these women shared the same two residential addresses and were frequently accompanied by the same man.

The investigation follows a report from the hospital regarding potential criminal infractions. The situation appears to exploit differences in nationality laws: while Belgium maintains strict bloodline-based citizenship (jus sanguinis), Spain grants Spanish nationality to children born on its territory to parents of Brazilian descent to prevent statelessness.

Investigators suspect this may be an organized surrogacy network targeting Belgian clients. By securing Spanish citizenship for the children, parents can more easily obtain permanent residency in Belgium through family reunification, potentially bypassing Belgian laws that restrict compensated surrogacy.
