Spanish political groups challenge renewable energy and waste models

Political representatives in Spain are raising concerns regarding the implementation of renewable energy and waste management projects. In Castelló, David Guardiola of the Compromís coalition has called on the Provincial Council to adopt a renewable energy model that respects the territory and local landscape. He argues that the current trend of large-scale photovoltaic plants and high-voltage lines risks benefiting only large investment funds while placing the environmental and social burden on local municipalities. Compromís advocates for a model centered on self-consumption, distributed production, and local energy communities to ensure wealth is shared with the affected towns.

In Catalonia, criticism has been directed at the Tracjusa plant project in Juneda. Critics, including representatives from Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya, argue that the project uses the guise of the ecological transition and biomethane production to mask a large-scale industrial waste management operation. They contend that the promised methane yields from livestock manure are unrealistic and that the facility will likely rely on massive amounts of urban and industrial waste to remain viable, potentially contradicting its stated climate neutrality goals.
