Spanish political groups debate historical memory and monuments

In Huelva, Spain, the Socialist Group (PSOE) has announced it will question the local government regarding the absence of historical memory references in the rehabilitation project for the city's former prison. The project, which has a budget of nearly eight million euros, includes plans for a dance conservatory, UNED facilities, and cultural spaces. However, the PSOE claims that recent communications regarding the project omit the space dedicated to recognizing victims of Francoist repression, despite previous assurances from the administration.

In Santa Cruz, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez announced that the City Council will take legal action against an order from the Ministry of Democratic Memory. The Ministry's order requires the removal of the 'La Victoria' monument, known as the Franco monument, by February 2027. Bermúdez intends to seek precautionary measures to halt the removal, arguing that the sculpture by Juan de Ávalos possesses artistic value that warrants protection under local heritage catalogs, even as a vestige of the Franco era.
