Spanish political parties debate immigration and integration
Political leaders in Spain are presenting diverging perspectives on immigration and security. Samuel Vázquez, the national spokesperson for Vox on security and immigration, has linked rising crime rates in Ciudad Real to current migration policies. He cited statistics claiming a 90% increase in homicides (including attempts) and a 428.6% increase in sexual assaults with penetration since 2017. Vázquez called for stricter border controls and the expulsion of foreign nationals who commit crimes, regardless of their administrative status.
In contrast, Gabriel Rufián, the spokesperson for ERC, has called for a deeper debate on the meaning of integration. Rufián argued against models that equate integration with cultural assimilation, stating that “integrating is quite the opposite” of being forced to renounce one's customs or identity. He advocated for a coexistence model that respects cultural diversity while upholding common rights and obligations.
