Spanish pork industry faces major export losses due to African Swine Fever

The Spanish meat industry is facing significant economic losses due to African Swine Fever (ASF), which has led to the closure of key international markets. According to the National Association of Meat Industries of Spain (ANICE), the impact on exports is substantial.

In the first half of 2026, exports to Japan and Mexico saw a combined value reduction of approximately 350 million euros compared to the same period in 2025. Japan has been particularly affected; exports of pork meat and offal to the country dropped by 77.5% in value, falling from 402.9 million euros to 90.6 million euros.

Monthly data indicates a progressive tightening of trade restrictions in Japan, with monthly meat exports falling from roughly 7,000 tons in January to just 600 tons in June. While some flows were maintained early in the year due to provisions for products packaged before October 29, 2025, industry experts warn that the full scale of the problem may not be visible until the second half of the year if market access is not restored.
